VALDOSTA, Ga. - South Georgia Medical Center opened the doors to its new state-of-the-art Surgery Center Friday.

The ribbon-cutting for the $18 million building was followed by a tour conducted by hospital employees.

James McGahee, chief executive officer of SGMC, recognized all those who made the construction of the facility possible.

Representatives from contractor Pinnacle Prime, architects Perkins and Will from Atlanta and various community members were honored for their dedication in helping make the concept of the outpatient surgery center a reality.

“This is truly a patient care center facility,” McGahee said. “It is attractive, not only for patients, but their family that waits while they undergo surgery.”

In 2008, some 7,322 outpatient surgeries were performed at SGMC.

These surgeries were conducted in the main operating suite of the hospital, the same facility that also handles emergency cases.

This overlap caused many non-emergency cases to be delayed or postponed when emergency procedures arose, McGahee said.

The new center will serve same-day surgery patients who have to undergo procedures related to ear, nose and throat; eye; orthopedics; general surgery; gynecology; and urology specialties.

The building has four operating suites, one cystoscopy suite, an admissions area, family waiting area, eight outpatient nursing beds, eight recovery room beds and 12 rooms in the discharge area.

The 35,023-square-foot facility is located in the 2400 block of Patterson Street.

The Surgery Center’s first outpatient procedure is tentatively scheduled for Wednesday.
